Description
King’s Quest II: Romancing the Throne is an adventure game developed by Sierra and released in 1985. It is the second entry in the King’s Quest series, and its title playfully references the 1984 film "Romancing the Stone".
After recovering Daventry’s three stolen treasures, Sir Graham ascends to the throne. One day, the magic mirror reveals a vision of a young woman named Valanice, imprisoned atop a gleaming crystal tower. Captivated by her plight, King Graham sets out for the land of Kolyma to rescue her. His journey takes him across sea and sky and even into the realm of death as he seeks the keys needed to unlock the three doors leading to the enchanted island where the witch Hagatha holds Valanice captive. Along the way he encounters legendary figures such as Neptune, Little Red Riding Hood, and Count Dracula — ultimately defeating each of them. Graham eventually frees Valanice, and the game concludes with their wedding, attended by both allies and former foes.
Like its predecessor, King’s Quest II originally used a text parser and shared a similar visual style.
Because the 1990 remake of King’s Quest I sold poorly, Sierra never produced an official remake of the second game.
AGD Interactive, then called Tierra Entertainment, released a fan-made remake in 2002, a year after their updated version of the first game. This remake once again modernizes the experience with a point-and-click interface and various graphical and audio enhancements.
