Description

Max Payne 2 is a third-person shooter released in 2003, developed by Remedy Entertainment and published by Rockstar Games. The story takes place two years after the original game. Max has returned to his job as a detective with the New York City Police Department (NYPD), but he continues to struggle with the traumatic memories of his past.

The narrative is told from Max's point of view as he looks back on the events of the previous few days. It begins with Max recovering from a gunshot wound in a hospital, where a group of assassins attempts to finish him off. After escaping, he reaches the morgue and discovers the body of a woman he recently killed. The story then shifts back several nights to reveal how these events unfolded.

Like its predecessor, Max Payne 2 features the iconic bullet-time mechanic, allowing players to slow down the action while aiming and shooting in real time. The effect is highlighted by a sepia-colored screen and is powered by a meter that refills over time or more quickly by defeating enemies. Players can also perform a shoot-dodge move, which briefly activates bullet time without draining the meter. The combat system introduces additional improvements, including secondary weapons such as grenades and Molotov cocktails, close-range pistol strikes, and occasional AI companions who can assist Max during certain encounters.

Notes

Download the small executable, launch it, and follow the instructions. This installer will then download the necessary files for the game and proceed with the installation.

MulderConfig lets you easily switch between different sound fixes, enable additional graphical options, and activate the Weapon Accuracy Patch. If you download the Language Pack, you'll also be able to choose any audio language and any text language.

Known issue: The game engine includes an optimization that skips rendering areas outside the expected visible screen space. This can cause brief visual artifacts along the edges of the screen, especially around doorways or when transitioning between rooms. Until a new Widescreen Fix is released that changes or removes this behavior, I do not recommend playing in 32:9. If you play in 21:9, keep the default FOV or even lower it, but avoid increasing it. Other "Fix Packs" have the same issue (visual example on this video).
